Welcome to India Press Live, where we bring you the latest breaking news from Imphal, Manipur. A 20-year-old man from the Meitei community, Luwangthem Mukesh, has gone missing, causing concern in the border state that has been trying to heal from ethnic clashes.

What Happened?

Mukesh’s mother, Luwangthem Omila Dev, filed a police complaint reporting that her son went missing after leaving home in a red Maruti Suzuki Alto 800. Despite efforts to locate him through relatives and friends, he has not been found. Mukesh also had a mobile phone with him when he left.

Police Investigation

Initial investigation by the police revealed CCTV footage showing the red car near Bishnupur district, close to Kuki-dominated villages, around 30 km from Imphal. Efforts are ongoing to locate Mukesh and determine the circumstances of his disappearance.

Background

Manipur has been facing tensions between the Meitei community in the valley and the Kuki tribes in the hills. The conflict, which started in May 2023, has claimed over 250 lives and displaced nearly 50,000 people. The struggle revolves around issues like land rights and political representation.

Recent Developments

The Centre recently ordered security forces to ensure free movement of people in Manipur from March 8. However, protests by Kuki tribes in Kangpokpi led to violent clashes, resulting in a fatality. Meitei organizations have accused Kuki groups of stoking unrest, while the latter seek a political resolution before allowing free movement.

The state, under President’s rule, is grappling with the complex dynamics between various communities and the need for peaceful coexistence. The disappearance of Mukesh adds to the existing tensions and underscores the fragile peace in the region.
