President Donald Trump has expressed his positive relationship with India but highlighted the issue of high tariffs in the country. He mentioned that starting April 2, the US will impose reciprocal tariffs on India. In an interview with Breitbart News, Trump discussed the US’ relationship with India and the upcoming tariffs.
During the interview, Trump mentioned his summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the high tariffs imposed by India. He emphasized the need for India to lower its tariffs to promote fair trade between the two countries. Trump also spoke about the India-Middle East-Europe-Economic Corridor (IMEC) and the importance of having strong trade partnerships.
Trump has been vocal about India’s high tariffs in the past, referring to the country as the “tariff king” and a “big abuser”. Despite negotiations between India and the US, no agreement on trade tariffs has been reached yet. Both countries have expressed interest in deepening their trade ties through a Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA).
During Prime Minister Modi’s visit to the US, plans for a BTA were announced, aiming to benefit both countries across multiple sectors. Trump’s statements regarding India’s tariffs and the upcoming reciprocal tariffs have sparked discussions about trade relations between the two nations.
