Big News: Telangana Assembly Renames Telugu University!

In a recent development, the Telangana Assembly passed a bill to change the name of Potti Sriramulu Telugu University to Suravaram Pratap Reddy Telugu University. This decision was defended by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, who also proposed naming the Cherlapally Railway Terminal after Potti Sriramulu.

Renaming Tradition

The Chief Minister clarified that renaming the university does not intend any disrespect to Sriramulu, who was from Andhra Pradesh. Since the formation of Telangana in 2014, many institutions named after personalities from Andhra have been renamed, and this practice is being continued by the current government.

Historical Context

Potti Sriramulu passed away after a 58-day hunger strike in 1952, advocating for a separate state for Telugu-speaking people. This eventually led to the creation of Andhra state in 1953, which later merged with Hyderabad state to form Andhra Pradesh in 1956. Telangana was then separated from Andhra Pradesh as an independent state in 2014.

Political Response

In response to opposition from the BJP regarding the name change, the Chief Minister emphasized that the government’s decision is based on recognizing the contributions of eminent personalities to Telangana’s formation. He criticized attempts to create misconceptions and link the renaming to caste issues.

Legacy Continuation

Revanth Reddy highlighted previous renaming instances, such as NTR Health University becoming Kaloji Narayan Rao Health University, to honor various contributors. He explained that the decision to rename the Telugu University after Suravaram Pratap Reddy follows this tradition of acknowledging significant figures.

Freedom Fighter Tribute

Suravaram Pratap Reddy, being a prominent freedom fighter in Telangana, was chosen for the university’s new name due to his invaluable services to the society. The Chief Minister also proposed naming the Cherlapally Railway Terminal after Potti Sriramulu, urging Union ministers for necessary approvals.

Community Recognition

Reiterating respect for former Chief Minister K. Rosaiah and the Arya Vysya community, the government announced renaming the Balkampet Nature Cure Hospital after Rosaiah. These decisions reflect the government’s commitment to honoring diverse contributions.

Opposition Stand

On the other hand, BJP leader A. Maheshwar Reddy questioned the rationale behind changing the university’s name and suggested alternative renaming options. The debate surrounding the name change continues among political circles.
