'Only Here To Set Things Right': Actor Mohanlal On Kerala MeToo Allegations

New Delhi: Actor Mohanlal has publicly praised the government for making the Justice Hema Committee report available to the public. This report sheds light on numerous sexual harassment allegations within the Malayalam film industry. Mohanlal, who was formerly the president of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), addressed the media amidst a wave of accusations against prominent figures in Mollywood, such as Siddique and Ranjith Balakrishnan.

Government’s Right Move

We welcome the Hema Committee report. It was the right decision by the government to release that report,” said Mohanlal. He emphasized that AMMA couldn’t possibly answer all the questions arising from these allegations, adding that inquiries need to be directed towards everyone in the industry. “This industry is filled with hardworking individuals. You can’t blame everyone for the actions of a few. Those responsible will be punished, and investigations are underway,” he assured.

The Hema Committee Report

The 235-page report, compiled by Justice Hema Committee, was made public after redacting the names of both witnesses and those accused. The report states that the Malayalam film industry is largely dominated by 10-15 male producers, directors, and actors who hold considerable influence.

Mohanlal’s Position

Mohanlal made it clear that he is not part of any power group within the Malayalam film sector and has no knowledge of such groups existing. According to him, AMMA, the association he once led, couldn’t address all issues due to the vast size of the industry.

First Public Statement

This marks the first time Mohanlal has spoken about the controversy since the release of the report. “Wrongdoers should be punished if there is evidence against them,” he stated, making a strong call for justice.

Resignation From AMMA

Earlier this month, Mohanlal stepped down from his position at AMMA following the release of sexual misconduct allegations against some of its members. His resignation came alongside criticism for not staying in office to ensure justice for the victims. Other executive committee members also submitted their resignations as the #MeToo movement gained momentum in Kerala.

AMMA’s Response

In response to the scandal, AMMA’s top decision-making body released a statement, saying they took “moral responsibility” for the allegations made against some committee members. This led to the decision to dissolve the committee in light of the serious accusations.
