Delhi Zoo Prepares ‘Summer Action Plan’ to Keep Animals Cool

Animals at the Delhi zoo are in for a treat this summer as the zoo prepares to implement its ‘summer action plan’ starting April 1. Zoo Director Sanjeev Kumar announced that various measures will be taken to ensure the comfort of animals during the hot summer months.

Cool Treats and Water Sprinklers for Animals

From fruit ice cubes for animals to water sprinklers for tigers, lions, leopards, and jackals, the Delhi zoo is gearing up to help the animals beat the heat. The National Zoological Park will roll out a series of summer care measures to keep the animals comfortable.

The zoo has designed a structured plan for different animal species, including continuous running water in pools for carnivores, herbivores, and reptiles, as well as shaded resting areas and sprinklers to prevent overheating.

Special Care for Different Animal Species

For carnivores like tigers, lions, leopards, and jackals, water pools will be kept filled and shaded, while water coolers will be set up in holding cells. Herbivores will receive frequent showers, and rhinos will be bathed twice daily to stay cool.

Primates will have air coolers in their enclosures and will be provided with special fruit ice balls for hydration and nutrition. Reptile enclosures will have shaded areas and wet gunny bags to keep them cool.

Monitoring and Additional Measures

To monitor temperature fluctuations, thermometers have been installed in key enclosures. Seasonal fruits like watermelon, cucumber, and coconut water have been added to the diets of animals for extra hydration.

The zoo staff has been instructed to be extra vigilant during peak hours and report any signs of distress among the animals immediately. Additional measures have been deployed this year to keep the animals well-hydrated and protected from the heat.
