Dhananjaya de Silva and Sanath Jayasuriya.
Former Sri Lankan cricket star, Sanath Jayasuriya, has been pivotal in two of Sri Lanka’s historic victories at The Oval, first in 1998 and again in 2024. Back in ’98, Jayasuriya made headlines with a magnificent double century followed by an unbeaten 24 in the second innings, leading his team to a spectacular ten-wicket triumph against England under Alec Stewart’s captaincy. Fast forward to 2024, and Jayasuriya, now serving as the interim coach, guided the Sri Lankan team to another memorable victory, this time securing an eight-wicket win over the Three Lions.
Jayasuriya Reflects on Historic Wins
The legendary opening batsman couldn’t help but draw parallels between the two landmark victories. “About 27 years ago, we won here with Arjuna (Ranatunga) as captain. Murali (Muthiah Muralidaran) took about 16 wickets, I scored a double-century, and Aravinda (de Silva) added 150. The Oval is truly unforgettable for us,” Jayasuriya recalled.
However, this recent win came under vastly different circumstances. “This time, the conditions were tough, with grass on the pitch, cold weather, and cloudy skies. All credit goes to these young players. They batted responsibly in the second innings and fielded superbly in challenging conditions,” Jayasuriya explained.
Sri Lanka’s Strategy: Four-Paced Attack
For this match, the Sri Lankan team opted for a four-pronged pace attack featuring Asitha Fernando, Milan Rathnayake, Vishwa Fernando, and Lahiru Kumara. This strategic move paid off handsomely, causing a dramatic collapse in England’s second innings, which was pivotal to Sri Lanka’s match win.
“It was the first time we went with four fast bowlers, mainly due to the conditions here. Each one gave more than 100% effort,” Jayasuriya proudly noted. “Our second-innings bowling was extraordinary. They stuck to the plan and bowled out the opposition in less than 35 overs for just over 150 runs.”
Praising the Pacers
Sanath Jayasuriya had high praise for the fast bowlers, especially highlighting Lahiru Kumara’s fierce attitude and exemplary line and length. “The attitude Lahiru Kumara showed was exactly what I expected. His line and length were excellent,” Jayasuriya said with satisfaction.
Asitha Fernando also stood out, delivering consistent performances throughout the series. Meanwhile, newcomer Milan Rathnayake impressed everyone with his disciplined bowling. “Asitha Fernando was outstanding the entire series. Milan Rathnayake did exceptionally well as a newcomer. Vishwa Fernando’s second-innings performance was exactly what we needed,” Jayasuriya added.
Pathum Nissanka’s Match-Winning Knock
Pathum Nissanka shined bright, smashing an incredible 127 runs off just 124 balls, steering Sri Lanka to their target of 233 runs. Jayasuriya couldn’t contain his admiration for the young batsman, especially given Nissanka’s injury struggles in the past.
“Pathum couldn’t play Tests for a few years because of injuries, but he’s been doing well in T20s and one-dayers,” Jayasuriya acknowledged. “He played his natural game here, and it’s a joy to watch. Even his partners can play their natural game when Pathum is in that form. It’s fantastic to see him perform well in all three formats,” he elaborated.
Unyielding Commitment to Cricket
Jayasuriya’s words made it clear that the Sri Lankan team’s success at The Oval was no accident but the result of planning, hard work, and an Unyielding Commitment to Cricket. He also hinted at the enormous potential waiting to be unlocked as more young players like Nissanka emerge on the scene.
“We need to maintain this level of dedication and keep nurturing young talent. It’s not just about winning matches but also about building a team for the future,” Jayasuriya emphasized.
A Bright Future Ahead
Sri Lanka’s cricketing future looks promising, and victories like these serve to boost the team’s confidence while honoring the contributions of past legends like Jayasuriya. The former star batter’s journey from being a key player to playing a crucial coaching role adds another rich chapter to cricket history.
As cricket fans around the world celebrate this victory, it also brings hope that the new generation will continue to uphold and build upon the legacy of strength, resilience, and passion that Jayasuriya and his peers have set in stone. With more talented players coming up the ranks, the future indeed looks bright for Sri Lanka cricket.
