The Assam police have made a significant breakthrough by uncovering a human-trafficking ring and rescuing two girls from the state who were trafficked and forced into marriage in Rajasthan. The girls, taken to Rajasthan under false pretenses, were sold and made to marry strangers against their will. The police’s investigation gained momentum when one of the girls managed to escape and return home.
Details of the Case
A resident of Talkar Grant, Gumrah Tea Estate in Cachar district filed a complaint at Kalain police station on January 24, stating that two women, Rupali Dutta and Ganga Ganju, had taken his daughter and his neighbour’s daughter to an undisclosed location with promises of job opportunities. The neighbour’s daughter, however, was able to escape and return home by train. She disclosed that they were sold by the women and coerced into marrying strangers.
Police Action
Upon receiving the FIR, the police initiated an investigation and successfully tracked a phone call made by one of the girls to her family. A police team, led by a woman officer, promptly went to Jaipur to locate the girl. With the assistance of the Rajasthan police, the team rescued the girl and apprehended a man named Leela Ram from Manpura, Rajasthan. Another girl from Adamtilla in Sribhumi district was also rescued during the operation after approaching the police team.
Current Status
Both girls have been safely brought back to Assam, and the investigation is ongoing to apprehend the two women responsible for operating the trafficking network in Assam. Reports indicate a surge in the activities of human-trafficking networks in Assam, with girls being trafficked out of the state on a daily basis. The traffickers target vulnerable girls from impoverished families, promising them job opportunities outside Assam but ultimately exploiting them for profit.
Many missing persons cases reported in Assam are linked to trafficking incidents, with families often unaware of their loved ones’ whereabouts until it is too late. A concerted effort is necessary to combat human trafficking effectively, with prompt police action crucial in addressing missing persons cases and dismantling trafficking networks.
