Comedian Kunal Kamra’s Joke Sparks Political Controversy

Mumbai: Comedian Kunal Kamra’s recent stand-up act at a hotel in Mumbai has stirred up a political storm after he made a joke about Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. The joke referred to Mr Shinde as a “traitor” in connection to his rebellion against Uddhav Thackeray in 2022.
Shiv Sena Workers Ransack Hotel Office
Following the release of a video of Kamra’s act on social media, Shiv Sena workers from the Eknath Shinde faction went to the hotel and vandalized the office. They were seen throwing chairs and causing chaos in the hotel.
Threats and Allegations
Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Nirupam threatened to physically harm Kamra, accusing him of taking money from Thackeray and targeting Shinde. Naresh Mhaske, a Lok Sabha MP from Thane, warned Kamra of “dire consequences” for his actions.
Legal Actions and Backlash
Shiv Sena MLA Murji Patel filed an FIR against Kamra and demanded an apology. Another party functionary, Rahul Kanal, sought to file complaints against Kamra, along with Aaditya Thackeray, Rahul Gandhi, and Sanjay Raut, for allegedly defaming Eknath Shinde.
Opposition Reacts
Opposition leaders have condemned the incident and expressed support for Kamra. Aaditya Thackeray questioned the law and order situation in the state, calling out the actions of the Shiv Sena workers. Priyanka Chaturvedi encouraged Kamra to “stay strong” amidst the backlash.
